Linkedin: a Complementary Option

LinkedIn is a nothing else than a “social” tool and, as that, its utility depends on how many users link their profiles with your. Being a scientist, mine is a particular experience: my network mostly consists of people I have indirectly worked with (and NOT for) - from the design agency I use, to a programmer I hire from time to time. That is to say people working in different labs with which I have shared credits for a published article. If I were to fish out from my network just those colleagues that could provide first hand references on me, well these would rank below the 10% of the total. Whether your need is to gather either references or just information on someone (i.e. me), you should then select just those I have worked for. Still this is not the best choice: a boss might be pretty peeved by someone intention to leave his lab. In conclusion, Linkedin is just a tool and I would not rely totally on it if I were to hire someone.
